With new 5 Star Energy Ratings calling for optimal efficiency, architects are increasingly seeking to maximise natural light, whilst maintaining aesthetics and reducing lighting costs. Intensive use of glazing however, can result in excessive heat build-up, resulting in increased energy costs associated with cooling the building.
GE Advanced Materials new Solar Control IR Sheet represents an entirely new technology in the challenge for energy efficiency. Proprietary resin additives are used to block near-infrared heat, whilst maintaining high light transmission levels. Studies have shown that this can result in energy savings of 25-40% in a temperature controlled environment!
Lexan© Solar Control IR sheeting is available in both the multiwall Thermoclear© range, or as monolithic sheeting. The sheeting is also available in green, blue or grey tints.
The new Direct Factory Outlets development at Essendon Airport, Melbourne has become the first building in Australia to use Solar Control IR Sheet. It incorporates approximately 550m2 of blue Lexan© Thermoclear Solar Control IR sheet in 16mm 3X profile.

This is the world’s first self-cleaning polycarbonate sheet! UV protected on both sides, Lexan© Thermoclear© Easy Clean sheet features a unique hydrophobic coating on the outside surface that reduces the surface tension of polycarbonate and increases the contact angle of water to the sheet. This causes larger droplets to form and wash away dirt, leaving the sheet almost spotless. Furthermore, it stays clean for longer, thereby reducing the frequency and the associated cost of cleaning.
